What is required for Sametime community awareness and chat to work on multiple servers?

There are certain fundamental requirements and assumptions made by the Community Server, which are essential to providing a consistent user experience. One of these assumptions is the concept of a “full mesh”. A full mesh refers to the way Sametime Community servers communicate with each other. In a full mesh environment, all Sametime Community servers communicate with each and every server in the Sametime Community.

Not running with a full mesh configuration might lead to awareness and presence issues and to a scenario in which the Community Server is constantly trying to connect to servers that are configured to be part of the mesh that are no longer in service.

The following must be present for awareness and chat to work on multiple servers:
    1. A copy of each Server document must be present in the Domino directory, in the same domain/community. 2. The Server documents must have the "Is this a Sametime server?" field set to "Yes." 3. In the Ports/Notes Network Ports section, the Net Address field must contain the DNS fully qualified host name. Additionally the fully qualified host name (FQHN) must be resolvable by other servers over port 1516. To verify these requirements are met, run a telnet test to the FQHN of the other server over port 1516 and confirm a connection is successfully established (telnet fqhn.otherserver.com 1516). 4. The Sametime servers must use the same directory protocol for authentication. For example, both servers must either use Domino directory (NRPC) or LDAP. 5. If the Sametime servers are not the same version, then the VP_SECURITY_LEVEL parameter in the Sametime.ini file must be modified to allow the servers to establish a connection to one another. If messages similar to the following are written to the sametime.log:
      I Server dd/mm/yy, 15:00:27 Rejecting server 192.0.2.0 - reported security level=0
    and if both Sametime 8.0.x and 8.5.x servers are running in the environment, certain awareness issues can be addressed by implementing the parameter VP_SECURITY_LEVEL=7000 in the sametime.ini. 6. The value of AWARENESS_CASE_SENSITIVE=0 in sametime.ini should be the same on all servers in the environment. The recommended value, and the default starting 8.5 is 0 - means the server is case insensitive.
If the requirements above are met and awareness continues to fail between the servers, then refer to the technote titled "How a Sametime server establishes a community connection with other Sametime servers" (# 1206752 ) to troubleshoot the issue.

Note: The Connection document of type "Sametime" is only used for Meeting services and not for Community Awareness. The Sametime Connection document is only required when implementing invited servers for on-line meetings. These Connection documents are unidirectional (see the Administration Guide for additional information on multiple Sametime servers). The Network Address field is not optional, and should be populated with a DNS name rather than an IP address. This will prevent future issues that might arise should the IP address change. To establish client awareness (chat), Sametime Connection documents between the Sametime servers are not required.

Once all of the above requirements are met, restart all of the Sametime servers involved.

For more about this topic, refer to "Extending a single Sametime community across multiple Domino domains" in the Lotus Sametime Information Center.

Real Problem & accepted Solution:

Problem: Sametime servers not communicating.

Solution: Check the sametime.log for error.
If Error is: (  I Server     13/Oct/11, 14:05:10 Rejecting server XX.XXX.XXX.XX - reported security level=0).

Change VP_SECURITY_LEVEL value to zero in sametime.ini as given in following.

VP_SECURITY_LEVEL =0
